This book is no exception. But what's unique about this offering is the clever way in which all these references are tied together, with the main character being sort of a Forrest Gump figure that inadvertently stumbles upon and/or causes a great many of the events that are now considered rock 'n roll legend. This device, along with Matt's subtle humor, makes the book tremendous fun to read. It's also cool how he brings in elements - people, places, and things - from his earlier novels, thereby creating his own fictional rock 'n roll universe, but with plenty of fact-based material to satisfy even the most ardent classic rock fan, like myself. Like his previous works the characters are immediately likeable and real. From the moment it begins you feel for Stanton. It's witty, fast paced, and touching. Well worth it at twice the price!
I have read all of Matt's books. Blue whiskey rocks. This was a hard one to put down and being able to relate to the story made it even better. Great job Matt.
this is the second book of matts I have read and I have to say it is the best so far . loved it from beginning to end . a hard story to walk away from he really keeps you into the story . cant wait to see what book he writes next
While this book at first seems to focus on the music business, and it is anchored there, it is really a good story about personalities and has good character development.
I have read several books by the author and this one may be my favorite. A fun story that is interesting throughout and of course like all of his books makes you laugh at times, Blue Whiskey is a fun ride with some interesting characters that you feel you know in real life.
Highly recommended with two thumbs up.
Once again, Matt Syverson has shown his maturing abilities to create unforgettable characters. His latest cast of eccentrics are unique, as always, and their experiences are authentic slices of life. In Syverson's skilled hands, their exploits are humorous and unexpected. Stanton's exploits on Bourbon Street, on a fishing boat, and climbing his way up in the music business rang so true. So did his more tragic battle with addiction.
I compared Syverson's book, "Black Dog", to the gonzo style of Hunter S. Thompson. This one reminds me of John Irving as his best. Blue Whiskey may be Syverson's "Garp".
Stanton's travels encompass America of the early 1970's and bring him back to where he began. I'm glad I got to tag along and see what his journey taught him.
This book is quite different from my usual reading fare (mysteries, humor). Although it is fiction, it reads like a very well-written autobiography. I found it incredibly interesting--the relationships, the insights into music, the music business, the development of an artist and his craft. It is peppered with humorous incidents, serious moments, and observations on the lessons of life and relationships. The protagonist, with all his flaws, was still a very likeable guy. The only reason I did not rate the book higher was that I felt it left me hanging at the end. At first I thought I might be missing the closing paragraph or even the final chapter. It just seemed to stop without fully wrapping up.
