It’s been one hundred and forty-five days since the world ended. Paragon has swept through the city of Pleasance like a reaper’s scythe. Now the dead walk the earth, seeking the flesh of the living. Still Jarod Samuels refuses to die. As a hunter, Jarod safeguards the Hive, the ruined mall he calls home. He exterminates zombies to protect the city’s last few survivors, and to keep Gabriel Anderson unharmed, their lives intertwined now more than ever. But in a city ravaged by Vertex’s corruption, there’s no telling what dangers each day will bring, whether the threats within the Hive’s walls might be deadlier than those without – or whether monsters from the past still lurk and linger in the city’s shadows.

Parasite Vertex Volume 2 Soren Summers 9781545018255 Books

Parasite is a brilliantly written rom-zom-com, with plenty of subverted tropes and clever snark. It starts out with a fairly different dynamic from the other Vertex books - zombie threats necessitate a group effort and often your own allies are more dangerous than the zombs. The addition of more characters makes it a bit less intimate - it's no longer just Jarod and Gabriel against Evil Corp. But the new secondary characters are all pretty interesting. While there is quite a bit of zombie skull smashing, we do get our glimpses of the true evil behind Vertex, and it is glorious. As much as I love some zombie carnage, the "fighting alone against the giant all-powerful corporate machine" is what gives me chills. And yeah, yeah, our heroes are great, but I really love the villains and I can't wait to see what Vertex does next.

Parasite Vertex Volume 2 Soren Summers 9781545018255 Books Reviews

“The universe doesn’t give a crap about you. You are merely a parasite on a planet.”

There you have it. Review over. That anonymous quote is Parasite by Soren Summers in a nutshell. A nutshell wacked with a sledgehammer.

Book two of the Vertex series resumes where Monster ended, Jarod and Gabriel fighting for their lives. Pleasance has gone to hell and the boys are forced to seek shelter in the Hive. What are they running from this time? Fricking zombies.

I’m not a big fan of zombies. The Walking Dead can just keep walking as far as I’m concerned. So I’m puzzled by the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed Jarod wailing away at a zombie’s head with two nails and a plank of wood until mangled brain matter was oozing onto the Hive’s floor. It was disturbingly awesome.

Parasite is a horror show. The Paragon virus has turned the Pleasance population into decomposing corpses searching for tickets to gore fest. The occupants of the Hive, which was once a mall, guard their safe hold with baseball bats and golf clubs from the sporting goods section and spend their days pulverizing the undead to pulp. It’s gruesome. It’s goory. It’s good. The fight scenes are savage. You cringe as your mind transmits the butchery. The unrelenting description masterly written by the author leaves you feeling queasy as good horror should.

Where the hell are Jarod and Gabriel during the zombie apocalypse? Trying really hard not to die. “Stay alive Samuels” Gabriel’s catchphrase for “I love you” is heard often in Parasite. Between staying alive, jealous tiffs and patching wounds, Jarod and Gabriel still find time for sex and are still adorable. Jarod reveals his vulnerable side in Parasite. At first it’s cute but later I was screaming “man up Samuels”. He lost his balls and Gabriel grew a pair big enough for both of them. Gabriel is kick butt angry and he uses that anger to annihilate anyone, dead, alive or unknown that gets in his way. All but one. One is too familiar. One almost gets him killed but Jarod grows a pair just in time.

Alliances are formed, allegiances are questioned and acceptance is survival as the Hive battles for the simple pleasure of another day amongst the living. Parasite ends with a flare of hope setting the night sky ablaze.

Bravo Soren Summers. “You’re a parasite for sore eyes” Gregory Ratoff.
This is a cracking book with a good pace, fantastic world building, with clarity and depth given to the characters - both primary and secondary. I loved Monster, book #1, thought Smolder, the little lay-over in Huster with two different MCs between books 1 and 2, was thoroughly enjoyable. Then Parasite solidified this series into something special and Soren Summers as an auto-buy author.

Creepy corporation creates zombies via a project designed to make lives better, Vertex may spin you another story but from where I'm standing... it's not so good for the people infected.

Parasite takes up five months after the end of Monster and Jarod Samuels and his partner Gabriel Anderson are holed-up with sixty odd other people in the Nth Pleasance Mall - and they tried so hard to get out of Pleasance but Vertex is not keen on letting its people go.

There's plenty to keep your interest in Parasite - zombies and what's happening with them, attacks and hunting, the dynamic in the Hive - what they call the mall - Jarod and Gabriel's desperate and intense relationship, newly introduced characters bedding in, another of Jonathon Hargove's creepy cameos, and survival.

I won't spoil the book so I'll just add my blog overview but if you like horror, dystopian, zombie, creepy corporation, romance books that are well written, here's your new series.

I can’t recommend the Vertex series highly enough. I’m grateful to writers like Soren Summers who bravely step outside standard romance and give me (gay) characters with arcs and plots I can bite into and lose myself in. This series is clever, subtle, entertaining. Yes, there is horror, say zombies, but nothing is forced, it’s neither too heavy nor is it lightweight. It’s a perfect balance. Once again only Jarod has a POV, but you still know how others are feeling because of the quality of the writing. The atmosphere is palpable and transports you, the exceptional dialogue, body language, exploration of the human condition, combined with humour, the superb plot, another slow burn to intimacy, and a strong primary relationship all make certain you know what’s happening and reels you in.

Seriously, if you like the sound of this series don’t hesitate or bypass it, pick it up and read it. While Smolder lies in between, different town and MCs who I suspect (only surmising) are going to meet up, and won’t that be something else, Parasite is technically book #2 after Monster. Every book written in the Vertex world thus far is a gem and the high average ratings around the place backs this up. These books were meant to be read, and read by many, so grab your tickets on the Vertex train and join me for one hell of a ride. All the stars.
